Approximate run time of two hours and 15 minutes with Preshow speech and Performance. ➢ Act 1: approximate run time 45-minutes Antiquity – takes place in the summer of 1865, on and around a Texas plantation. ➢ Intermission: 15-minutes ➢ Act 2: approximate run time 60-minutes Present Day – takes place at the family home of Samuel and Annie Will in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Juneteenth marks the day freedom finally reached people who had been free for two and a half years and were never told. The order was always theirs. The news was simply late.
We're telling this story in a particular year. America turns 250, and the country will gather around the promise it made in 1776: that freedom is a birthright, that all are created equal. We honor that promise best by telling the truth about it.
The words were written in 1776, but freedom did not reach the last enslaved people until 1865 in Galveston, Texas. We tell The Juneteenth Story in this anniversary year on purpose, not to challenge the celebration, but to complete it. You cannot tell the whole story of American freedom and leave out the part that came late. Juneteenth is the receipt. It is the day the promise had to prove it meant everyone.
I direct from a single belief: truth is more interesting to watch than performance.
So I did not ask this company to perform freedom for you. I asked them to live in it. To listen, truly listen, to one another. To be brave enough to stay fully present and let the truth arrive on its own. To honor every word as it was written by my mother, because she, like the people who carry our stories, does not choose her words by accident.
We tell this story because freedom stories are living things. They belong to the ancestors who could not say them out loud, to the elders who hold the memory, and to the young people watching and learning what their own voices can do.
If you were fortunate enough to witness this Black Theatre Experience, you witnessed artists standing in the glory of their own humanity and trusting you to meet them there.
My deepest thanks to this incredibly anointed group of performers, and to the designers and crew who built the world around them. You trusted the vision. You trusted the process. You trusted each other. And you trusted me. Thank you.
Thank you, Toy, for keeping my grandmother Annie Will alive.
Thank you, Duane, for portraying my grandfather, Samuel Gatlin. I will be forever grateful that two Samuels were in the room on opening night in 2026.
Thank you both for being more than actors in this process. I believe Holy Spirit placed you both alongside me to encourage me, remind me, and protect my mind.
Thank you, Mama, for creating this work and trusting me with it. Thank you for immortalizing our family.
And thank you, Abram Freeman and Leigha T. Porter. You know what you've meant to this journey.
Happy Juneteenth.
Yes indeed,
Josiah Price
